What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence.

We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949.

We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence.

We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose

The ICRC’s Law & Policy Forum unit focuses on research, outreach and training on international humanitarian law and other norms.

The unit supports the ICRC’s engagement with practitioners, policy-makers and academics, focusing on key emerging issues and debates in humanitarian law, action and policy.

The Law & Policy Forum is offering a one-year paid Associate position in its Legal Training sector. The post holder will work under the supervision of the Legal Training Advisor, collaborating closely with other units and divisions of the ICRC, in order to prepare, develop and deliver the ICRC's legal training offer for humanitarians and policy-makers.

Accountabilities & Functional responsibilities

  • Contribute to onsite training activities : Support the development of tailor-made thematic training programs on IHL and humanitarian policy by conducting research and participating in the preparation of content and selection of speakers, etc.
  • Create and / or update a number of thematic resources and teaching tools (reading lists, scenario-based simulations, etc.

    Prepare internal assessment reports of the training provided

  • Support the development and maintenance of the ICRC’s online legal training tools (e-learning modules), in partnership with field and HQ units.
  • In particular : Coordinate amendments of the existing IHL e-learning modules Support the production & promotion of other language versions of the e-

    learning modules (focus on French and Arabic)

  • Assist with the logistics and organization of legal training activities : Assist with logistics before, during and after training activities (including travel & visa arrangements) Communicate with training applicants and participants Produce training materials (participant lists, backgrounders, speakers’ bios, etc.
  • Provide general administrative support

  • Support the promotion of all legal training activities : Maintain a calendar of internal and external legal training events Maintain the sector’s internal communication page Propose strategies for external promotion of ICRC’s legal training offer
  • Deliver IHL presentations to various audiences through the ICRC’s Visitors’ Service program.
  • Contribute to other projects as assigned by the Legal Training Adviser or Head of Unit.
  • Certifications / Education required

    Advanced university degree in international humanitarian law, international law, humanitarian action / policy, or international relations (with a strong legal component).

    Professional Experience required

  • Demonstrated ability to draft clear and concise texts for external communication;
  • Strong IT skills (Word, Excel, databases) together with a demonstrated aptitude and enthusiasm for using new IT tools and systems;
  • Previous experience in event management / event communication, or in teaching / pedagogy is an advantage;
  • Previous experience working with contact relationship management databases is an advantage.
