FREZNA PROJECT : Sustainable strawberry sourcing in Morocco

Context and Risks :

Strawberry is the number 1 fruit in volume and spend for Danone, and a substantial share of our needs are sourced in Morocco in Larache region.

The strawberry production entails several sustainability risks that could highly affect Danone business and our stakeholders’ :

  • It is very labor intensive, in regions where laws and regulations are not always enforced (social);
  • It has an important CO2 and water footprint due to the heavy use of irrigation and plastics in the production - greenhouse tunnels as well as plant protection (environment);
  • In Morocco, yields are going down every year and many small farm holders do not always track their profit (economic).
  • The project will achieve the following goals :

    SOCIAL : 100% farmers compliant with law and regulations in Morocco (employees registered, minimum salary paid, access to health insurance and number of work hours & vacation days respected, yearly medical check-up).

    ENVIRONMENT : Develop and promote sustainable agriculture practices, focusing on soil health, water management and pesticides use.

    Develop waste management practices and find a viable solution to recycle plastic waste.

    ECONOMIC : Identify and implement levers of optimization on the farm, such as : yield improvement, retention of pickers for a reduced turnover of their workforce.

    Develop long term agreements with farmers to support their investment in sustainability

    The Sustainable Strawberries Project Manager will contribute to the implementation of Danone sustainability strategy for our Processed Fruit sourcing.
