Position Information Position Type Professional Staff Faculty Track Position Title Laboratory Animal Technician Employment Status Full Time Months 12 Campus Biddeford, ME Description The Laboratory Animal Technician is responsible for performing operational, administrative and technical tasks to provide comprehensive care for all species of laboratory animals at the institution;
shares in the responsibility of the overall day-to-day functioning of the animal facilities. Responsibilities
Perform all routine tasks necessary to maintain appropriate facility conditions for physical environment (housing, space recommendations, temperature and humidity, ventilation, illumination), behavioral management (structural environment, social environment, activity), and husbandry (feeding, water, bedding changes, sanitation, waste disposal, pest control)
Understand and comply with Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC ) policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s), the Guide for the Care and Use of Animals (Guide), PHS Policy (Policy), and OSHA regulations for the animal care and use program (ACUP ) and effectively communicate these standards / requirements to researchers and staff to ensure understanding and compliance
Work collaboratively with all principal investigators, research staff, the IACUC , and other personnel to maintain regulatory standards of housing and care in the animal facilities
Work efficiently with University departments to ensure proper preventative and ongoing maintenance, security, and cleanliness of rodent and aquatic animal facilities
Communicate regularly with the attending veterinarian (AV) and provide appropriate support in the absence of the AV with respect to animal health issues / concerns
Monitor / track population management (identification and records, genetics and nomenclature), and create and distribute weekly census counts to users
Ability to work weekends and holidays, and willingness to provide emergency coverage as needed
Other duties as assigned. Qualifications
BS or BA in a relevant discipline required
A minimum of 1 -3 years of animal facility experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience required
Sufficient general and specific knowledge of the USDA Animal Welfare Act, the Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals
