Position Information Position Type Professional Staff Faculty Track Position Title Director of Intercultural Student Engagement Employment Status Full Time Months 12 Campus Biddeford, ME Description To provide university-wide coordination to enhance the University of New England’s welcoming and inclusive community climate regarding issues of diversity.

To provide leadership, on the Biddeford and Portland campuses, for the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Diversity Programs.

To serve as a proponent for underrepresented and international students by providing orientation programming, services, and advocacy.

  • The Director’s primary focus is on supporting the enrollment, retention, and graduation of underrepresented and international students;
  • advising affiliated student clubs and organizations; and designing and facilitating trainings and workshops. This professional in this position also raises awareness for the entire UNE community about multicultural and social justice issues through the coordination and implementation of events, workshops and trainings. Responsibilities

  • From admissions, and orientation to graduations, serves as primary contact and coordinator of student support services for under-represented students including students of color, international, students), LGBTQ students, and students from diverse religious and economic backgrounds.
  • This position will have a physical presence on the Biddeford and Portland campuses.

  • Coordinates and implements UNE Diversity Lecture Series and contributes to the Interprofessional Collaborative on both campuses.
  • Works in collaboration with faculty, staff, and student groups to develop co-curricular programs that support curricular goals for multicultural and diversity awareness.

  • Coordinates speakers and events for annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on both campuses in collaboration with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Supervises student employees in the management and operation of the Cultural Exchange Lounge and all related department administrative duties.
  • Advises culturally-based student clubs and organizations in regards to program development, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Works with staff to develop, plan, and deliver workshops and events associated with the Diversity Leadership Certificate and Advanced Diversity Leadership Certificate programs, and assesses the quality of programs.
  • Develops and implements trainings and workshops that foster multicultural awareness and cross-cultural sensitivity including those that are part of the Diversity Leadership Certificate, Residential Education and Housing programming initiatives, and Orientation efforts.
  • Conducts a wide range of assessment measures to track undergraduate student retention efforts including campus climate surveys and student focus groups.
  • Identifies and develops opportunities to secure additional external resources, i.e. grant funding and internal and external collaborations / partnerships to strengthen UNE’s diversity initiatives.
  • Develops infrastructure and communication vehicles (website, social media, information kiosks, newsletters, etc.) to promote campus and community resources including those responding to a broad range of race / ethnicity / nationality / LGBTQ , religious and spiritual needs.
  • Supports UNE involvement in community civic initiatives and committees (i.e. NAACP Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee, Institute of Civic Leadership initiatives, Portland Housing Authority Riverton Inter-Professional Clinic, etc.).
  • Serves as liaison to develop community partnerships that connect UNE students with volunteer / service learning, and experiential learning in community and clinical setting to enhance awareness and sensitivity in working with diverse populations.
  • Serves on University and Division of Student Affairs committees including the University Committee on Community, Equity, and Diversity, Orientation Committee, and other committees as assigned.
  • Remains current on new and emerging trends in multicultural and international education, and helps constituents learn and apply principles.
  • Commits to actively fostering a welcoming culture of inclusion and diversity.
  • Regularly evaluates and reports program outcomes in a variety of formats.
  • Other duties as assigned including Commencement and Orientations. Qualifications Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, or related field required and minimum of five years professional experience in student affairs with significant experience in supervising and directing a program or service area within or or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and / or experience working effectively within a multicultural / international community as a leader, advisor, mentor, and advocate.
  • Ability to meet and enforce deadlines, take initiative, and work independently to carry out complex assignments.
  • Superior communication, presentation, interpersonal, ambassadorial, and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to a student-centered approach, demonstrating initiative in reaching out and building relationships with underrepresented and international students.
  • Ability to deal effectively and collaborate extensively with a wide range of University personnel and others outside the University.
  • Experience facilitating diversity trainings and workshop presentations.
  • Evidence of effective programming and assessment of outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising staff.

    The University allows for religious and medical exemptions to the policy. If you believe you are eligible for a medical or religious exemption to the vaccine policy you may seek the exemption through Human Resources after receiving this conditional offer of employment.

    Please note that no person to whom the policy applies will be finally employed or permitted to work if they are not fully vaccinated unless they request an exemption and are granted one.
